My models—my private models—are not Hemingway not Faulkner not Dos Passos, or indeed any American writer. I model myself on jazz, musicians, dancers, a couple of whores and a few junkies.
“Modern Western man lacks a divine image with which to represent his sexuality, which would explain in part the perturbation and the repression engendered by sexuality. A return to mythical models would instead open a space in which instinct can be rendered psychic and transformed into eroticism.”

“He’s a mystery man in any language, enveloped in a pall of myths, prejudices, and armchair theories. Who is this ladies’ man, this sexy devil? There’s really no good name for him. A man who lights up women, adores them, and love-addles them for life defies all the familiar stereotypical models: smooth players, hunks with big hoses, money lords, or any of the scientific/therapeutic versions of the alpha romancer. The true ‘woman-charmer’ baffles every ingrained image; he’s the lover nobody knows.”
- Betsy Prioleau, [Swoon: Great Seducers and Why Women Love Them]
“It is unfortunate that in this culture, the search for personal meaning in terms of archetypes has become so crass. Our children, robbed of the rich archetypal heritage of mythology, are left to find their models from MTV. Rambo has replaced the mythic Hero and Barbie dolls, the spirit of Aphrodite.”

[ The Root Chakra and Objectifying the Body ]
“One of my clients constantly referred to her body as “this thing she dragged around with her.” Another worried about her figure to the point of obsession, trying to make it look just like the models. Another, who was a dancer, said, “I get so mad at my body when it doesn’t perform the way it’s supposed to.” The body can be an alien entity to the person whose first chakra is damaged, seen as a static thing rather than a living statement of the soul. Alienation from the body results in objectifying the body, which means seeing it as an object, like a puppet master sees his puppet. Women in this culture often regard their body as a thing even if they suffered no abuses as children. As Susan Kano writes in ‘Making Peace with Food’, “It is only through extensive and continual conditioning that an intelligent human being comes to see herself as an ornament, whose first priority is the attainment of a slender body, rather than as a complete human being who has a myriad of other concerns and unlimited potential.” As we objectify ourselves and each other, we come to see the body as a thing to be controlled and maintained, rather than as a living, dynamic statement of who we are.”
